Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as obturation, is a dental procedure aimed at sealing the dental root with special materials during endodontic therapy. The filling is necessary to protect the deep internal tissues of the tooth from external infection, preventing the development of inflammatory processes and eliminating the recurrence of the underlying disease.

The obturation procedure is performed using a dental microscope, which magnifies the operating area by 40-50 times and displays the image on a screen. This allows the dentist to see all areas deep inside the branched canals, which may be numerous and complex, in order to effectively fill them with special obturation materials, tightly sealing the openings.

Root canal treatment requires great attention and skill, so at the ORTHO clinic, obturation is carried out exclusively by highly specialized narrow-profile specialists.

Purposes of Root Canal Treatment

Inside the tooth, there is a special cavity (pulp) penetrated by a neurovascular bundle, which nourishes it with useful substances and is responsible for innervation. Penetration of pathology into this area causes pronounced pathological sensations accompanied by swelling and intoxication.

Such a condition requires urgent medical intervention to save the tooth, otherwise there is a risk of losing the tooth unit and worsening the patient’s overall condition, up to a lethal outcome. Root canal treatment leads to sealing the cavity from the penetration of harmful organisms, the decay of which creates ideal conditions for the development of pulpitis and other dental diseases.

Stages of Canal Filling

Canal Filling Techniques

Depending on the specific clinical picture and peculiarities of the pathology, dental specialists choose an individual method of root canal filling for the patient:

1. Gutta-percha filling

Heated gutta-percha is used, which penetrates even into microscopic branched canals, replicating their shape and reliably sealing after solidification.

2. Vertical condensation of heated gutta-percha

Heated gutta-percha is introduced into the canal space using special plugs and spreaders, which compact the filling material, filling all the branches and curvatures.

3. Central post or single-cone method

Applied in the presence of a wide and straight root canal, which the dentist shapes in advance to fill with heated gutta-percha.

4. Lateral (buccal) condensation

Special gutta-percha pins are introduced into the root canals, which are then cut at the ends and reliably sealed.

5. Sectional method

Used for severely curved root canals with small pieces of gutta-percha, 2-3 mm long.

Consequences of Poor Root Canal Filling

Mistakes in root canal filling lead to disease recurrence and financial losses for the patient, as well as other adverse effects and diseases:

To avoid the listed unpleasant moments, the professionalism of the dentist is crucial. At the ORTHO clinic, a specialized specialist always carries out quality diagnosis of the oral cavity, thoroughly cleans the root canals, selects the filling material and sealing method competently, and pays special attention to hygiene processing.

Recommendations After Canal Treatment

The result of root canal filling can be preserved only by strictly following the dentist’s recommendations:

Remember that after root canal filling, teeth may be particularly sensitive to external stimuli for several days. However, these sensations will soon disappear, and the irritating effect will diminish.
